Jodie Shelley

Authors, Featured, Fiction

Jodie Shelley has released three novels in as many years, and she shows no signs of stopping, with her fourth novel touted for release in 2026. Shelley writes novels set in New Zealand, which are easy to read and fun, but which explore grittier themes such as problem gambling and family harm.

“When I started writing my first novel, I decided I wanted to write the type of book that I would like to read. That’s why my books are filled with lots of interesting characters, kiwi settings, a few laugh-out-lout moments, lovely short chapters and a grittier sub-text running through the storyline.”

Shelley’s debut novel, The Tūī has Landed (February 2023), earned finalist status in the Wishing Shelf Awards, an international award judged by readers in London and Stockholm.  Following this success, her second novel, A Thousand Paper Cups (June 2024), not only reached finalist status but went on to win a coveted Bronze Award, marking another milestone in her writing journey.

“When I started writing my first novel, I decided I wanted to write the type of book that I would like to read.”

Jodie Shelley Author

Shelley was inspired to write her first book after following an Instagram Live series entitled ‘How to Write a Novel’ that renowned Irish author Marian Keyes offered. “Marian would go live on a Monday night in Ireland, and I would tune in on my way to work on a Tuesday morning in New Zealand. She answered questions and generously shared her writing advice. She even set us writing challenges, one of which eventually evolved into my first book.”

Jodie Shelley’s unique storytelling and ability to find humour in difficult situations have quickly made her a beloved author in New Zealand and beyond. Her books are perfect for anyone looking for a light, pacey read with a touch of humour and warmth.

Her third novel, Zoe and Mila was released in August 2025.
