“Even if she did believe in their magic, she wasn’t going to trust anything from a Patupaiarehe.” Maia has heard of an ancient fairy-folk; not the mischievous helpers found in regular fairy tales, but pale-faced predators, who lurk in the mountains of Aotearoa.
Maia, Lily and Quinn are a self-reliant trio of siblings, living in an orphanage. They discover an old set of Bibles being used to cipher secret messages, along with an escape plan. Maia is enthusiastic, until she meets the message senders.
Should they trust the little red-heads, who appear at night, offering freedom?
Maia has heard of an ancient fairy-folk; not the mischievous helpers found in regular fairy tales, but pale-faced predators, who lurk in the mountains of Aotearoa. The siblings are quickly swept along a magical journey in which Maia’s reluctance to trust threatens to endanger them all.
A gripping tale for young readers, weaving New Zealand history and fantasy into a thrilling adventure through South Otago and beyond.
For 9–12 year olds.
