An 1870 visit by Armed Constabulary Sergeant Patrick Kelly to the rugged Great Barrier Island turns into investigating a shipwreck, and a brush with pirates. Later in the Northern gumfields, Kelly finds himself alone facing a murderer, who tries to hunt him down and kill him.
